The Aswan High Dam is situated across the Nile River in southern Egypt. The reservoir that it created, Lake Nasser, has a capacity of 169 billion cubic meters.
The Aswan Dam was built by the British in 1902, the first of the dam’s 12 hydroelectric generators being activated in 1967. The project has been very successful; when the dam was completed in 1970, its waters had reclaimed more than 100,000 acres of desert land for cultivation .
The Aswan High Dam stands 364 feet (111 meters) tall and is 12,565 feet (3,830 meters) long. Unbelievable quantities of silt, sand, clay, and rock were used to form the dam.
